Description of the School

Founded by Piero Farulli in 1974, the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is among the most famous of Italian music schools.  It offers several different formative educational courses including a music kindergarten, pre-academic music school, bachelor, master and post-graduate courses with annual masterclasses with major artists from around the world.

The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is also the home of the European String Quartet Academy, the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, and has active collaborations with other world class universities and conservatories of music, including the Conservatory “G. Verdi” of Torino, Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, Norwegian Academy of Music, and the Accademia Montis Regalis, Royal Conservatory The Hague, Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, Royal Northern College of Music, Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris among many others.

Students at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole have the unique opportunity to embrace and experience this culture firsthand by studying with internationally respected and renown professors, keepers of the Italian and western musical traditions, by visiting some of the world’s finest collections of paintings, statues and frescoes in numerous museums throughout the city, as well as being able to attend concerts held by excellent ensembles such as the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina and the Orchestra della Toscana, among others.

Upon completion of a degree program at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, graduates will be well prepared to carry on the torch of our common cultural heritage. They will be ready to enter into their desired professional musical setting with an enhanced world-view and appreciation of the performing arts and an acute sense of artistic expression paired with technical refinement.

The City of Fiesole is located in the foothills that surround Florence and was founded around the 9th-8th century BCE by the Etruscan civilization. It has been continually inhabited ever since, controlled by the Roman civilization, the Florentine Republic and ultimately the Italian Republic. The Scuola di Musica di Fiesole is located in a 16th century Villa, easily accessible by public transportation, 6km from Florence’s Duomo cathedral and historic city center.

Florence is known as the birthplace of the European Renaissance and home to some of the world’s finest and most treasured works of art and music. Jacopo Peri was chosen to create the operatic genre in 1598 for the auspicious occasion of the marriage of Maria de Medici to King Henry IV of France, as a revisited representation of ancient Greek theatre tradition and affirmation of the cultural influence the Camerata de’ Bardi had on daily Florentine life.

Music has held an important role in the Florentine Republic. From the early years of the 11th century, Guido d’Arezzo changed the very way that music was written, read and interpreted for liturgical and ecclesiastical performance; Guido standardized what eventually became today’s “Solfeggio” system, giving names to each of the first six notes of our modern diatonic major scale.

Among the numerous innovations and contributions to posterity in the music world by Florentine citizenry and through Medici patronage, Bartolomeo Cristofori conceived and created a new keyboard instrument capable of playing in all dynamic ranges, both soft and loud, the Pianoforte, in the year 1700.

With the close vicinity of Florence and its invaluable cultural heritage, our course offerings, the quality of our facultyand guest artists and collaborations with other exceptional international music schools, the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole can offer students the opportunity to truly develop into a new generation of world-class musicians.
